Out Now—Traceless (Stateless Series, Book 2) by Meli Raine (@meliraineauthor)

Release date: November 19, 2019
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Series Description:

When you’re born without a trace, no one knows you’re a weapon.

Book Blurb:

It's not against any formal rule for us to sleep together.
It is, however, strictly forbidden to have feelings for each other.
I can't do one without the other at this point.
Which means I am doomed.
When you don’t know who you can trust, reality distorts. It twists and oozes, disintegrating and reformulating to meet whatever needs its masters demand.
Just like me.
Just like Kina.
Except everything is different now that we know who we really are.
But there’s a second reality, you see.
This one can’t be manipulated.
It just is. Solid and true, it takes our mission, our training, our orders, turning them into nothing but secrets and lies.
And this new reality means my old reality is trying to kill everything I love.
Including her.

Read the second book in USA Today bestselling author Meli Raine's new Stateless trilogy.

The Stateless Series also includes:
Stateless, Book 1 (Available 10.15.19)
Fateless, Book 3 (release date 12.26.19)

I pull her into my arms on impulse, her small sound of pain as her eyebrow brushes against my shoulder making me let go.

“Sorry.”

“No. It's okay. I like being close to you.”

“You do?”

“Yes.”

We breathe into each other, mouths a few inches apart, her features blurring. An edge lives inside me, vibrant and real, relocating wherever it's needed. It divides me, making me know the difference between baseline calm and danger.

I want to live in baseline with her.

I want to live with her. Not co-exist.

Live.

She turns, somber and achingly present.

“We can't keep doing this.”

“Doing what?”

“Not talking about this.”

Instead of asking her what she means, I slide my hands to her waist, palms greedy at her curves. She's taut and fit, with more muscle than I can see. My hands find it, memorize it.

Want it.

“Let's talk, then.”

“We're breaking every rule.” Her eyes flit to the jammer bar on my wrist again.

“Once you’ve mastered the rules, you know when you have to break them.”

“We were never taught that.”

If you enjoy reality bending sci-fi like Inception, The Matrix, and Waking Life, you'll love Mirrors!

All Sarah wants is to find her father. All Sam wants is a sense of purpose amidst her seemingly perfect life. What they find is much more than either of them bargained for.

Sarah has been searching for her missing father for the past four years. Sam has a seemingly perfect life, but something is missing. A set of strange circumstances and the onset of confusing visions sets them searching for answers. Individually they discover the answers the other needs: a secret formula, the answers to the disappearance of Sarah’s father, and a shadowy organization that seems to hold the key.

As the visions increase in intensity and frequency, and the women struggle to keep a grip on reality, they embark on a journey to understand what it all means. The connection that exists between them has larger implications than they can imagine, and they are not the only ones who know about it. They must work together, with a newly forged team of friends to evade capture and protect a mind-bending formula from getting into the wrong hands.

Sarah and Sam must become connected, truly connected, and discover their true purpose as the lives they once knew unravel before them.  With everything they cherish on the line, can Sarah and Sam solve the mystery of their connection before time runs out?

Moments later, the lights went out and they were standing in total darkness.
Sarah felt her head begin to swim, pulling her mind away from reality, until she slowly found herself back, face to face, with the nightmare of the caves.
The barn owls emerged from the blackness, swooping down over her as she lay helpless and rigid on the floor. Her body was one giant, pulsating heart. She was letting go and could not tell where the owls were coming from, whether from her mind, out of the cave of Lizard’s Foot, or out of the dark corners of the basement.
She felt the gentle tug of sanity leaving her body with each exhale and floating through the air before her. She was well beyond the point of caring. In fact, she felt like embracing it. Beyond the syncopated rhythm of blood pumping and wings beating, she could hear Lucas’s voice calling her name softly, as if through the wall of another room.
“Sarah… Sarah! What are you doing?”
Lucas’s voice grew louder and started to pull Sarah out of her hallucination-fueled daydream. She was now realizing that this was in fact a daydream. She had not experienced any visions for a while now, as she had not taken any Balixa in over a week.
“Sarah, please get up. I know you’re scared, but we’ll find a way out of here. I promise.”
Lucas’s voice was delicate and filled with promises, sweet sounding to Sarah’s ears; a pleasant addition to Sarah’s daydream, nothing more. She did not want to leave, though she could now feel her head resting in his lap, his hand gently stroking her hair, pulling her further and further out of the vision.
And then she felt something, much more uncomfortable: the pain in her chest, the familiar aching that had driven her here, looking for her father. Now all she wanted was to escape, to not feel the pain that had persisted all these years. She closed her eyes and began to drift off again.
“Sarah, no,” Lucas pleaded, now an irritating reminder of the outside world she was growing to hate. “Sarah please, I need you. Don’t check out again.”

Most men hated when I defied them. My opponent waited, intriguing me when he hesitated to force me out of his way so he could take what he wanted. Men liked to think they ruled, and in their opinion, the strongest men got the best women, and that was that.
Wise men realized some women conquered their own mountains and tossed off every man who challenged them.
One day, I’d figure out where I stood in the grand scheme of things. I’d been raised to be a man, a warrior above other men, the strength and pride of my clan. I should have become a man when I had turned ten, but thanks to my stupidity, I had ended up a woman instead.
Remembering pissed me off enough I either needed another beer, a fight, or both.
“Move.”
The bar cleared out, and Petey numbered among those bailing. I arched a brow, shrugged, and reached across the bar to snag myself another beer, careful not to touch the Starfall stone. “When I’m done drinking my beer, I’ll move.”
Within a minute, Oyster Bay emptied, leaving me with the three cloaked figures and a man at the other end of the bar too stupid to run or too brave for his own good. When he spotted me looking in his direction, he lifted his bottle in a salute.
Men were a dime a dozen, but sometimes, a pretty one came around, and my flavor of the month was tall, dark, and handsome enough to remind me there were a few perks to being a woman. He smirked at me, likely anticipating the fireworks from the stone or the brewing fight between me and the three men who wanted it.
I liked his mouth, and my gaze locked on his lips before I managed to force my attention back to my trio of unwanted guests.
Outside, thunder rumbled, rain pattered on the bar’s metal roof, and the storm stirred the ocean’s ire, splashing salt water against my feet.
“Move.” The man took one step forward, and his voice remained emotionless and calm.
“Cheers,” I said, lifting my bottle towards my lone spectator. If he wanted a show, I’d give him one, and when I was finished with the three men determined to invade my personal space, I’d leave him a little memento to remember me by. I scooted my stool back, stepped into the water, and met my adversary’s gaze.
I set my beer down beside the Starfall stone. “You’re not going to let me finish my beer in peace, are you?”
He took another step and leaned forward, his breath hot on my face. “No.”
Walking away would’ve been smart. Leaving the Starfall stone to burst and cause mayhem without me in the general vicinity would have been wise. Instead, I unsheathed my sword and rammed the pommel into his gut.
I smiled and went to work. All I’d leave for him were bruises and his life. He didn’t deserve anything else from me, not even a scar.

“The devil is in the details.”

It was a steady beep that woke her.Dayna struggled to open her eyes. Her lids were heavy, as if they had been glued shut. She panicked for a minute, thinking she might have died and they had sealed her eyes. She lifted a hand to rub her face and felt the tug of something tethering her. She pulled, then moaned from the sharp pain near her elbow.
Brisk hands tucked her arm under a sheet next to her side. She turned to find Jenna Finnes adjusting an IV line.
Their eyes met, and Jenna said in a flat tone, “Don’t yank the IV out.” She walked over to a whiteboard, erased someone’s name, and printed her own, her face grim.
Dayna cleared her throat. Before she got any words out, Jenna spoke without turning around. “They brought you in last night. Minor abrasions. Sprained ankle, nothing serious.” She turned around, and her face held no warmth. “Whoever you were rolling around in the woods with left you there.”
“I wasn’t…” Dayna coughed. Her throat hurt when she spoke. Jenna poured her a cup of water.
“Whatever.” Clay’s wife shrugged. “You were out for a long time. There’s a bump on your head, but the CAT scan was negative.”
Dayna took the water with one hand. The other cautiously touched a tender bump on the side of her skull.
“When can I get out of here?” Dayna asked.
“They’re not going to let you drive home, not that your car is here anyway. The doctor will give you more information when he stops by.” Jenna walked toward the door.
“Jenna,” Dayna called after her, “who brought me in?”
“Sherry and Terence found you.” Jenna answered without looking at her.
Dayna could feel hatred emanating from the rigid stance of the nurse’s body and closed face. She could not stop herself from calling her name again. “Jenna?” Jenna turned, her eyes unfriendly. “How’s Clay doing?”
Jenna pulled open the door and left without another word.

Conor Nash has lived his life with a single purpose—to pitch in the Major Leagues. He’s been released from professional baseball contracts ten times over a sixteen-year career, but he’s overcome every obstacle to finally reach The Show when he’s a decade too old.

As he faces the specter of injury-forced retirement, he becomes a man neither he nor his wife recognizes. During his career, Conor avoided the trap of alcohol and drugs because his drug was baseball. And what can an addict do when he realizes he will never get that high again?

Conor climbs treacherous Camelback Mountain, drinks a bottle of Champagne, recalls people and events, and seeks an answer. Who is Conor Nash if he can’t pitch?

The Conman is based on the Life of Keith Comstock. Keith pitched professionally for sixteen years, including Major League time with The Seattle Mariners, the San Diego Padres, the San Francisco Giants and the Minnesota Twins. Following his retirement in 1992, Keith has held minor league coaching and managing positions with several organizations.  For the past decade he has served as the rehabilitation instructor for the Texas Rangers.

Read an excerpt:
Scottsdale, Arizona
Spring Training 1983

“First thing I want to make clear,” Jocketty told Conor, “is how much we respect the effort you’ve given us. Everybody in the organization, Bob Didier, Fred Tuttle, hell, even Billy, says you’re a good man with talent.”
Conor’s knees felt a little wobbly. Jocketty’s statement sounded like a preamble to release if Conor had ever heard one.
“It’s not that we don’t want you, because we do. It’s a matter of space. Since Charlie sold the club we’ve been doing a better job of stocking the minors. We have a lot of hot young lefties at A ball who’ll be knocking on the double-A door pretty quick this season. And at the same time, you’re bumping up against some real good lefthanders above you.”
If they kept Conor at this point, Jocketty explained, a mid-season release was probably inevitable.
            “So…
So, Conor picked up the thread mentally, you’re releasing me now with a few days left in Spring Training when everyone else’s rosters are set and there’s no way I’ll find a job?
“… we sold you to Detroit.”
            “Um … say what?”
“We sold you to Detroit. A guy over there is a friend of mine, and we talked yesterday.”
The Detroit guy told Jocketty Detroit had a slew of young pitchers at Double-A Birmingham and they needed a mature left-hander to solidify that group.
“I told him I knew just the guy. So, we sold you to Detroit.”
“Sold me? How much did you get for me?”
“A hundred dollars.” Then he added quickly, “That’s no reflection on you. It’s the standard price for a transaction like this.”
Conor wasn’t sure what to say. After all, they could’ve released him and been done with it. He couldn’t, however, keep his disappointment from showing.
“Hey,” Jocketty said. “You’ve still got a uniform.”
Conor stood and extended his hand. “You’re right. And I appreciate it. Everyone here has been fair. I’ve learned a lot.”
Jocketty reached to take the offered hand.
Conor turned to go.
“There’s one other thing,” Jocketty said.
            “Yeah?”
            “Remember Charlie’s orange baseballs?”
Conor did remember. The season before Conor signed with Oakland, Finley had tried to convince other Major League owners that baseballs should be orange. He’d argued that fans could see them better and would find the game easier to follow. So, he’d had all these orange baseballs made, and the A’s were stuck with thousands of them.
“We thought we’d never get rid of ‘em. Turns out, though, now everybody wants some of Finley’s orange baseballs as collector’s items.”
            “Okay …” Conor said.
“So, my friend wants a dozen. It’s part of the deal.”
“A hundred dollars and a dozen orange baseballs?”
“Yeah, and I’ve got ‘em right here. Would you mind delivering them when you get to Florida?”

* * *

“They sold you?” Kate’s eyes glistened a little. Pregnant again and caring for an infant, Conor sensed that things were beginning to pile up for his wife.
            “Yeah.”
“Didn’t the Civil War resolve all that?”
            “Not for baseball.”
“Do we get any of the money?”
            “No”
            “Was it a lot?”
            “No.”
“You don’t want to tell me, do you?”
“A hundred dollars and a dozen baseballs.”
Her eyes glistened a little more.
Not once had Kate hinted he should quit. She genuinely loved baseball. True, they were always broke. They lived winters with their parents. They pieced together off-season jobs to achieve any semblance of financial solvency. She seldom complained, though, rarely gave any indication she didn’t love this life they shared. But Conor sensed she was on the edge this time.
“I’ve still got a uniform,” he said.
Kate took a deep breath, blinked and found a smile. “Yes. Yes, you do. So where are we going?”
“I’m going to Florida and finish Spring Training. You’ll be meeting me in Birmingham.”
            “Alabama?”
            “That’s the one.”

Read a teaser:

As her ship approached the planet, the ability to communicate faded. Tripton-4 was a unique world; a small moon nestled within an array of giants, and the only planet in the known universe to have an ocean above its atmosphere.
It appeared to all who observed it from afar as a planet consisting solely of water. From space, it looked foreboding, a violent planet with ominous storms and tumultuous seas. Any onlooker could only imagine it as a planet inhabited, if at all, by the simplest of life forms and surely unsuitable for colonization. This illusion had protected the Triptonians for millennia, allowing them to develop in peace.
But this floating ocean had not always existed. The advanced technologies of the Triptonians had enabled them to take advantage of the planet’s unique positioning to create the anomaly. Their civilization had discovered the moon thousands of centrons ago. Needing to flee a dying world, they saw this new planet as an opportunity and a chance for a peaceful existence.  They employed a force field on the surface that was enhanced by the moon’s multi-level magnetic core. This, coupled with the gravitational effects of the surrounding planets and duel suns, enabled the aberration to occur: a floating ocean. The terraforming had taken generations to complete, but theirs was a patient race. While leaving Tripton-3 had been a difficult and heart wrenching experience for this playful and peaceful race, the pride in their accomplishment in creating this new home was a source of great joy.
Within the ocean, an array of glowing and transparent organisms now swarmed like luminous dancers. Their movements sent soft melodies into the atmosphere below that were often heard by the population, cascading over the plains as well as the crowded streets. In the morning hours, misty deep hums were heard, the echoes of gentle movements of Sermathabees, the large, lolloping, transparent beasts of the sea. As they moved, their breaths brought forth a deep hallowing hum that rolled and sank.
Whoom-ba-ba-whoom-ba-ba-whoom…
The sound would vibrate down through the water, enchanting those below as they awoke to the day.
As the planet’s two suns set, and the rays of light seeped through the clouds, diffusely tinted magical colors would appear in the evening glow. Then the population would hear the cries of the soaring Gulathabees, their giant wings sending down warm breezes from the swirling waters above. With these lumbering beasts, the population experienced a knowing state of tranquility, and lived their shrouded peaceful existence for thousands of centrons.

Passing through the ocean always brought unease to Allaceia, even though she knew that her ship would be guided with complete safety through the protected channels. While this allayed her fears, the awe of it all never diminished.
About the Author

 photo Roberto_zpsyoufebha.jpg
Roberto Arcoleo was born in New York City, Queens to be exact, into a working-class Italian-American family. Roberto’s father was a hardworking, grumpy, and reserved restaurateur, his mother a warmhearted, talkative hairdresser.

Roberto was a bit of both. He grew up in Astoria in a two-bedroom ground-floor apartment with one younger brother, his parents, and an invalid grandmother. His early years were tumultuous and confused. Roberto never felt that he fit into the molds that were laid before him. His early extended family home life was chaotic, and his teenage years were worse. After the Catholic grammar school, he continued on to a Catholic high school. He hated them both.

As a teenager, Roberto felt more and more apart from his surroundings. He withdrew into his own world. To onlookers he seemed full of bravado, but he was timid and reserved at heart, always feeling out of place. He started lashing out at the world with violence as mark of distinction. He found a home within street gangs and hard drugs at fourteen. Roberto started living on the streets at fifteen, but was soon taken in by a schoolteacher uncle who lived on Long Island. His uncle held him captive from his own devices until he graduated high school.  Later, in college, he studied psychology hoping to find answers. Still troubled, he didn’t find the answers he needed in the text. He gave up his clinical ambitions for more underground alternatives. The same uncle gave him his first camera, and he discovered photography.

Under a name other than Arcoleo, he obtained recognition as an artist. He received his MFA from Brooklyn college and later saw his art reviewed in the New York Times. Roberto’s work has been acquired by major collections. Among them Brooklyn Museum, the Chrysler Museum, the Museum of Fine arts in Houston and the Museum de l’Eysee, Lausanne Switzerland. He was the first artist working in photography to be given a one-person exhibition at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art; he was awarded a stay at the American Academy in Rome; and his work is presently in the National Gallery of Art.

He always had an urge to write and his late mother was always asking for his first novel. He told her he had to wait until he was called from a special place.
