“Murder and Mayhem” #urbanfantasy #romance #humor and a #recipe from guest author Jennifer Macaire and @EvernightPub

“Murder and Mayhem” An urban fantasy with a dose of romance and a zest of humor. If you liked Buffy the Vampire slayer, you'll enjoy May, the vampire killer!

Meet May, the vampire killer. She's quick, clever, and deadly, and she takes life very seriously having been killed once before by a mob of rogue vamps. Her father, a powerful necromancer, brought her back to life. She's M.U.C.I.'s (Mutant and Undead Criminal Investigation) best man, er, woman, well, zombie actually, for catching and killing rogue vampires, so when two kids show up with all the signs of having been killed by a rogue, May gets the case.
Clues lead straight to a certain Bartholomew Aelfrith, a vampire, whose sense of humor and tall blond good looks are enough to convince May he needs killing, even if he's not the killer. If he makes one more joke about her chop-sticks, she's going to stab him through the heart with one. The problem is, Bartholomew is probably the only person who can catch the real killer, so May has to put up with his insouciance and his wise-cracks, and his penchant for picking up strays of all kinds.
But if he says, "I've got a plan" one more time, she's going to scream.

Teaser

May stepped outside and opened her umbrella. The burst of hail had changed to sporadic, slushy rain. It was a glowering, bitterly cold evening. Clouds moved sullenly across the dark sky.
From her street on the hill, she could see the river curving in its gentle S, the two bridges, Christmas Junction where the sky scrapers glittered, and downtown, where she could hopefully find a taxi. The clouds were so low that they hid the top half of the skyscrapers in Christmas Junction. A train, far in the distance, looked like a brightly lit caterpillar crossing the busy downtown area below.
The street she lived on was in a quiet residential neighborhood with old trees and a large park behind a tall, wrought-iron fence. The buildings, trees, and fence all leaned together, conspiring to keep the riffraff out. The sidewalk was clean and the cars lining the road gleamed. No riffraff here tonight … unless that shadow was up to no good.
May tilted her head to get a better look. In between two cars, on the opposite side of the street, huddled a shadow. The hair on the back of her neck prickled. Something was not quite right. The shadow was too small to be a human, but too large for a dog. It slid around to the far side of the car to hide as May drew even.
What was it hiding from? And what was it? May was curious. She closed her umbrella and hooked it over the fence on her left, and then she darted across the street and peered behind the car. Crouching near the rear bumper was a small, skinny boy.
Hi there. Are you all right?” May started toward him.
He bared his fangs and hissed as she drew near.
May’s step faltered. A vampire child. An abomination! Who the hell had made him? The prickle of fear turned into a full blown shiver. Poor creature. Too young to fend for itself, but dangerous nonetheless. As soon as it realized its powers it would go on a killing spree, and nothing living could resist it. Slowly, she eased her hand into her purse to get her cellphone to call for backup.
Don’t hurt me,” he whimpered, cowering against the car. His eyes were huge with panic. Blood on his neck and a wet, brown stain on his T-shirt showed he hadn’t changed his clothes since it had happened, and that it had been recent. That was a blessing, at least. The more recently he had been killed, the weaker he would be. She might be able to handle this on her own.
Staying well back, she examined him. He wore no jacket and one of his shoes, May noted, was missing. I won’t hurt you. Where’s your other shoe?” It was best to stick to unimportant things. Or at least, things that seemed unimportant. At times like this, anything could be crucial. Anything could set him off. She had to be careful. A rogue vampire had made this creature, and its saliva was deadly for anything other than a full-blooded vampire.
My shoe?” He glanced down at his foot and flinched. “I don’t know.” He looked back up at her, his eyes pleading now. “I don’t know. I woke up nearby, I think, in a park. I woke up when the hail hit my face. I don’t know where I am. I don’t know who I am. Can you help me? I should be cold …” His voice trailed off. “I’m dreaming. Is that it? Is this a dream?”
May nodded, forcing her lips into a smile. “Yes. It’s a dream.”
Poor creature. He’d been badly made, hastily made, and made against all the laws and rules that governed the vampire clan. Not that they had many rules, and not that they really cared. They followed the rules only because they feared the consequences of breaking them and not from any moral obligation. May moved very slowly, so as not to startle him into attacking her.
I can help you,” she said, crouching in front of him. “It’s a strange dream, isn’t it? I can help you.”
I just want to wake up.” His voice was hoarse and his fangs, sharp as needles, glittered with bloody saliva.
All right.” May eased her hand into her purse. “I want you to stand up straight. That’s right. Now, close your eyes and say, ‘There’s no place like home.’ Say it three times, and you’ll wake up.”
All right.” He nodded, pathetically glad to obey. He screwed his eyes shut. “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.”
May took careful aim and drove the stake through his heart.
There’s no place like … home.” The creature opened its eyes, but they were empty and saw nothing now. He was so slight he fell like a ribbon to the sidewalk, landing without a sound. His bare foot pointed at the sky. It started to rain again, harder.

EXCERPT

A vision in pink.
He blinked hard to be sure he was seeing what he thought.
It was a woman standing in the open doorway of the morgue. Her long, almost waist length dark hair flowed over a pink dress that nearly reached her ankles. Her feet were bare.
Daniel’s heart began to beat double time in his chest, as she crooked a finger at him.
Was she real? Or was she some spirit of a former patient from Barrow Haven?
He seen some oddities over the years, most likely because of his eternal condition. But never a ghost or spirit like this one. She absolutely shined, and he found himself rooted to the spot, unable to lift his sneakered feet.
When she blew him a kiss, his feet unstuck, and he walked towards her. Just as he got closer, she suddenly turned, and darted into the open doorway of the morgue.
He knew he shouldn’t pursue her. He didn’t know what she was, or what game she may be playing. Yet he picked up his pace, until he entered the open doorway where she disappeared just a minute or two earlier.
*****
It was true he didn’t really know her, but his new keen sense of perception told him she was a kind, gentle soul, lovely…and lonely as he was. A woman without connection. And that made him even more attracted to her. An attraction that went beyond the beautiful face, or the use of her perfect, sexy body she freely gave to him.
It was something much deeper, he was sure. Something that had begun by chance, by fate, maybe. Something he could not just walk away from. Now she was telling him she would leave forever.

EXCERPT

Before Jill knew what was happening, he reached for her and clamped her against his chest in a big bear hug. His frame was rock solid and he smelled of musky cologne. Hunter’s arms wound around her securing her at the waist. “Sorry bud,” he whispered to Brad, “the press is watching.”
Jill stared up at him, her mind whirling. “Hunter! Just what are you doing?” She didn’t know why, but her knees felt weak and her mouth went dry. She was probably in a state of shock. It wasn’t like she recalled that old longing she’d held, when she’d hoped to be in Hunter’s arms, so many years ago. Then, she’d imagined him to be a different kind of guy…the sort who could really care for a girl, and sweep her off her feet with one kiss. Not that she’d let him try, especially after learning what sort of guy he really was. The type who was only in it for the moment, and wouldn’t have given her a second thought once she’d completely given him her heart. His dark eyes caught the sunlight as he dipped his chin toward hers.
“Making us public,” he said with a grin. At once, Jill felt transported in time and she was all of seventeen again, helplessly under Hunter’s spell. The next thing she knew, his mouth was on hers, all hot and heavy, his tongue sweeping in to taste hers. Jill sagged in his arms and he tightened his embrace. This was wrong. This is insane… But Jill found herself kissing him back, just a little at first—and then a lot. He felt so good and smelled so fine, she nearly forgot they were standing at the edge of a parking lot. Jill’s temperature spiked as her tennis racket crashed to the ground. Oh man, he was good. Better than good. Hunter’s skill was top-notch. Excellent. Why oh why, had she waited so long? Or perhaps it was good she’d waited, until the fruit of her desire had ripened to perfection. Was it Jill’s imagination, or was Hunter just as ravenous for her? Somehow her arms were around him, her wrists overlapping at the back of his neck. It was almost like she was enjoying this, wanting more of him... What? Hunter? Jill called herself up short and broke away, stepping back with a gasp. At least she hoped she was gasping and not panting. Whoa.
Hunter saucily cocked an eyebrow and spoke with a husky rasp.
“Can I take that to mean you missed me, too?”
My Best Friends Bride - Advert

CHARACTER BIOS

Jillian (Jill) Jamison – The heroine from My Best Friend’s Bride, Jill Jamison, is a thirty-year-old relationship expert. She has shoulder-length brown hair and warm brown eyes with hints of honey around the irises. Jill’s first book, Love Like You Mean It, was an international bestseller. Her second tome, Long-term Love: Making It Last, tanked. Now, Jill’s under pressure to produce a third book, Married Love: Keeping Those Home Fires Burning, that’s up close and personal. The trouble is—though she’s experienced at giving others advice—Jill has never had luck in the boyfriend department herself. She has several ex-boyfriends, including Isaac who gave Jill her dog Fifi. Jill also has a Tom cat called Mimi. When hero Hunter hears about Fifi and Mimi, he refuses to live under the same roof with pets having such ridiculous sounding names. This makes Jill steamed, as does everything else Hunter says and does. When he unexpectedly lays a hot kiss on her while seeing her for the first time in twelve years, Jill’s absolutely furious! She’s also angry with herself for reacting so eagerly to Hunter’s advances. He’s the guy she’s hated since high school. Surely, a fake marriage will never fly with a dyed-in-the-wool womanizer like him! Forget that he’s more handsome than ever, and has that lop-sided smile that still makes her weak in the knees. And never mind that her deadline for marrying is only a few weeks away. Jill can’t imagine making things work with the type of cad she warns women about. Not Hunter Delaney! No way!
Hunter Delaney – Hero Hunter Delaney is also thirty and works for an advertising agency. He’s back in town after being away for more than a decade, during which he’s developed his skills on the job and failed at his numerous encounters with women. Hunter has his own reasons for guarding his heart, so emotionally he keeps females at bay. Ultimately, they become frustrated and walk out on him, just like Sabrina did when she almost clobbered him on the head with the three-inch high-heeled shoe she lobbed in his direction. Hunter has dark hair and eyes, a buff frame, and stands over six feet tall. He’s been Brad’s best friend since prep school, and has repeatedly come to Brad’s rescue by getting him out of trouble. This time is no different, except it involves that stuck-up brunette Jill Jamison, who was too good for Hunter in high school and now believes she’s better than the rest of the world. Okay, so Jill’s held up pretty well over the years and still has those pretty brown eyes Hunter mooned over as a teenager. But, deep down, she’s still an “ice princess” with that same chilly heart. At least, that’s what Hunter thinks until Jill’s fiery hello kiss has him believing she’s experienced a deep thaw…
Cassandra Evans – Cassandra Evans has been Jill’s nemesis since high school. For as long as Cassandra’s known Jill, Jill’s been a pain the neck, besting Cassandra again and again at every competition. Cassandra wanted to write novels, but instead she’s stuck working for a gossip magazine. And just look at Jill with her worldwide celebrity! Though Cassandra’s sneakily discovered that little-miss-prissy Jill isn’t always as successful as she claims to be. Cassandra takes pride in being the one who brought Jill’s second book down by publishing her exposé on the “fact behind the fiction” of Jill’s real dating life. Now, suddenly, looky here! Jill’s getting married! Not once, but twice! First, to her childhood friend Brad, which smelled fishy enough. Next, to famed womanizer Hunter Delaney, which stinks to high heaven! If anyone smells a rat, Cassandra does, and she’s extra good at getting to the bottom of things. Thank goodness she’s tall, blond and leggy, and has a way of influencing sources. She’s also got the wardrobe for tackling any undercover operation. A fact that comes in handy when she meets a nerdy—yet increasingly attractive—private investigator engaged in the same mission.

Excerpt Calvin Edwards

Calvin had no idea what the hell he was doing. He walked into the car park pondering whether he should call the police, longing for someone else to take over the extensive mess he’d somehow found himself in. He reached into his jeans pocket for his mobile phone, contemplating to call the police and have her picked up, get her some serious help, but he feared for her and the baby, and what would happen to them.
There was something in his mind calling out to him to help her. He saw his car and debated to climb in it and drive away as fast as he could, leaving her to deal with her own mess she had created. Clearly, she had been shameless. Otherwise, why would her parents turn their back on her, especially carrying a baby? But listening to what she had to say and how she got involved with a bad crowd, that could be enough to course any family break-up, or had she twisted the story about her parents to get sympathy?
He felt sick, there was no way he could take her back to his parents’ place, no way on this God’s living earth. She would take one look at the hall and see pound signs and lavish in his lifestyle, and there was no way he was going to be brought into her having his wallet. Hell, he had learned that over the years of being used and abused for his assets. Yes, his family was wealthy. Yes, they ran a hall and several businesses. Yes, he had the lifestyle many people would dream about, but he never took it for granted.
Okay, Calvin told a few white lies, he wasn’t living with anyone or had flatmates back in London. He owned the place out-right, worth millions, but wasn’t about to admit that. He lied about not owning the car and about going to prison. The nearest he’d been to the building was a school trip having a guided tour, that was it. He never considered himself being a swot, but he was brought up to respect people, their values, views, and lifestyles and clearly Kacey had some really serious issues on these.
He walked over to his BMW and leaned against the front wing, folding his arms across his chest, wondering what to do. He took a deep breath. His mind was all over the place searching for answers. If he couldn’t take her back home, and she certainly wasn’t welcome at her parents’ house, what would be the next option? He rubbed his chin and rolled his tongue over his teeth, thinking hard.

Kacey Richards

While she stood, waiting for her mum to finally show her face, things had changed drastically for her from being the prim and proper young girl into a woman who had no respect, lost her elegance, rough with no courteous or any thought for others, until getting shit on herself. Well, who really gave a fuck? The only time people helped you was when they needed something in return, hell I learned the hard way, like always!
The door opened and her mother stood before her, glaring at her like she was dirt.
“And what do I now owe the honour for this time?” she asked sarcastically lifting her brows. “We have discussed all that we needed to yesterday, now leave us alone,” she growled.
“Please, Mum. I need you.”
Her mum was about to shut the door when Kacey quickly jammed her foot into the frame. “Please. I am so sorry for all the trouble I have caused, but I have nothing and I mean nothing,” she pleaded.
“Well, you should have thought about that before spreading your legs and getting yourself in such condition.”
“Please, I never intended for this to happen, and you cannot blame the innocent child I’m carrying.”
“I’m not blaming the child. I’m blaming you,” she said cut throat.
“Fine. I understand that. But please we need your help.”
“You need my money more like. Do you think I am stupid? You’re going to rob us blind and run back to whatever trouble you are in,” she said thinning her eyes.
“No. I…we have finished. He wants nothing to do with me and this little one,” she said rubbing her tummy and glancing down, scrunching up her nose. Never had she felt so alone.
“I need somewhere for me to be safe.” Kacey lifted her head, gazing deeply into her mother’s harsh eyes, really needing her mum to stop being stubborn. After all, it was Kacey who had the problem with her parents, not the baby. Then thinking about it, she had disgraced the family.
“Look, I am sorry for disappearing all those years ago,” she said, keeping her foot lodged in the way as her mum attempted to close the door again.
“Move your foot,” her mum said sternly.
“Please, Mum.”
“You’re only here for money.”
“No, I need somewhere safe for myself and the little one.”
“Don’t you dare use the baby as the excuse,” she said, pointing her finger at Kacey, frowning.
“Please, Mum,” she said again pleading with her.
Her mum tried shutting the door again on her foot.
“Go away, and if you have any sense you will leave the village and not come back.”
Kacey moved her foot from the door. Her mum slammed the door shut. Kacey stood, staring at the large door not believing her mum could be so spiteful again, just like yesterday.  She felt like hitting her head against a brick wall. Her mum was just not prepared to listen; clearly she had shamed the family greatly. Her heart sunk to the pit of her stomach in anguish.
