I've always felt an affinity for the Victorian period. I was wearing high-necked blouses with cameos, long flowing skirts, and lace-up boots in my teens, long before they were fashionable. (The corsets came later...!) With my long hair parted in the middle and pulled back into a bun, I could well have been one of the heroines in the books I loved so much.

 

I was also a science geek from my earliest days. I received my first microscope when I was five, and my first chemistry set at seven. I entered every science fair. In seventh grade, I won grand prize on a televised science quiz show.

 

So it’s hardly surprising I’ve become a devotee of steam punk. I've been in love with this strange meld of science fiction and Victoriana for as long as I can remember – long before steam punk even had a name.  When I was in high school, I devoured H.G. Wells and H. Rider Haggard, and shared a Sherlock Holmes obsession with my dad. Later, I marveled at Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age and more recently, I discovered Gordon Dahlquist's incredible The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters. 

 

I've written a number of steam punk short stories for anthologies, as well as a full length novel, Rajasthani Moon.

In an effort to be more active, I walk down the hallway toward the stairwell, with a bounce in my step and a smile on my face.

Declan and I have the whole day, and now the night, together. He's re-creating our first dates, starting with a wine picnic at the same park and ending at the incredibly private lighthouse where we had dinner. You can rent it for overnights now, and Declan did. Set up everything with our nanny, Mia.

Or, rather, his executive assistant did. Still... it counts.

I get Declan all to myself for more than twenty-four perfect hours.

Our daughter is settled in with Mia, the wonderful nanny we've had since I went back to work, and there's a birthday party tomorrow for a pre-school classmate that Ellie's so excited about. An indoor splash park, pizza, cake, and fun–what more could a nearly-four-year-old want while Mommy and Daddy are gone?

Something in my chest pulls a little. She's our one and only, and it’s been almost eighteen months of trying for a sibling with no success. The mental gymnastics I go through to avoid thinking nonstop about my body's failure are incredible. If they gave medals for Fertility Crossfit, I'd be on the podium.

Secondary infertility is a phrase I've come to loathe.

“MAMA!”

Just as my hand is on the industrial steel door to the stairwell, I hear her, Ellie's footsteps banging down the carpeted floor, her dark, wavy hair flying behind her like a mare's mane. A grin stretches her face, and she's clutching something made of red construction paper. Mia walks behind her, slow but observant, moving toward us but in no hurry.

Her bond with Ellie is secure.

“Yes?”

“I made this for you and Daddy!”
