An Unusual Vacation

At thirty-two Dominic Carr thinks it’s time he met a girl he could love. He’s tired and jaded from his high power job, and hoping that this summer’s vacation will be refreshing. When he sees Michelle Vega in the art gallery of a harbor town he visits, her long legs in pink couture shorts grab his attention.
Michelle Vega has everything to hide except her beauty and her instant attraction to Dominic. She’s not on vacation as she visits the gallery—more like on business.
When Michelle’s business takes a dangerous twist Dominic finds he’s pulled into a perilous situation.
Will this be a test of his love or the finish of it?

Chapter One

“When are you leaving, Dominic?” John swiveled in the chair at the next desk, pulling his phone headset from his ear. “Janie and I thought you might like to come over for dinner this Sunday.”

Dominic watched the numbers change on one of the computer screens as a stock exchange closed overseas. He cast a weary glance at John. “I’m leaving tomorrow night. I need the break. Give Janie my regards. I’ll catch you later … I still need to pack and stuff.” He’d finished his shift and couldn’t wait to leave the brokerage.

Dominic couldn’t have faced spending time with the couple again, anyway. Newly married, they radiated love for each other––which was nice, but not great to be around when a man didn’t have anyone in his life. A sliver of envy wound its way uncharacteristically around Dominic’s heart and squeezed. At thirty-two, Dominic figured it was time love dropped into his life, the way he’d seen it happen recently to a number of people he knew.

Fatigue drained him that night, and yet he’d not had a hard working day––for a change. Dominic shook himself. This was no ordinary fatigue. I’m tired of my life. Headed home at last, he took the stairs down to the lobby, instead of the elevator.

Ben, the security doorman, gave him a cheery smile. “Goodnight, Dominic. Have a good weekend.”

Dominic forced a smile. “See you, Ben. You too—but I’m actually off on vacation for the next three weeks.”

He took the alley that led to the office parking lot and aimed his key fob at his car. The dull clunk of the door unlocking comforted him. He got in, started the engine, and reversed into the space to exit the car lot. I need something good to happen, something uplifting, unusual, unexpected—something refreshing.

Dominic flipped on the lights in the hall. He dropped his keys onto the polished mahogany table, and his jacket over the ornamental acorn at the bottom of the staircase handrail. He took off his tie and threw that at his jacket. It slid to the floor, but Dominic shrugged as he opened the two top buttons of his shirt. His study and his old leather armchair beckoned, and he intended collapsing there with a glass of bourbon for half an hour, as he caught the late news on TV.

His stomach rumbled. Dominic remembered he hadn’t eaten since breakfast and strode to the kitchen instead.

Dominic hung on the fridge door gazing along the half-empty shelves. His gaze landed on the two eggs precariously placed so they threatened to roll and splat on the dove-gray floor tiles. With a small murmur of resignation, Dominic picked them both up in one hand, and took the frying pan down from a hook over the stove. As the eggs sizzled, he put two slices of bread in the toaster. All the clean glasses were in the dishwasher he’d yet to unload, and Dominic took one out. It clicked on the granite worktop as he placed it there before adding ice and bourbon. The bread popped up in the toaster. Dominic spun around and caught it. He slid the fried eggs from the pan onto a slice of toast and jammed the other slice on top. Dominic took a bite of the sandwich, then picked up his bourbon and wandered along to his study.

The door was ajar and he nudged it open with his foot. He set the glass of bourbon down on a low table placed by his armchair so he could switch on the TV and drag a footstool closer. The TV screen lit up, and Dominic took another bite of his fried egg sandwich as he flopped onto his armchair. The yolk ran to the crust and he caught it with his tongue. He never watched anything but the news channel, and so he dropped the remote down by his side, knowing the news would be back after the commercial. The sandwich and the bourbon mellowed him as he stretched out his long legs on the footstool and watched the world news.

After the headline stories, Dominic’s thoughts drifted to his vacation. He needed to pack, but the motor yacht would be ready for him. His dad’s caretaker saw to that. Dominic intended taking a leisurely cruise on the thirty-two foot motor yacht, named River Sprite. He’d crewed the vessel alone on a number of occasions. It was an easy sail and in fact, the yacht was very much a floating luxury suite. He’d pick it up at his dad’s marina berth and amble from the estuary, where two rivers met, up the river that ran parallel to the one on which his home and work were situated.

He intended stopping at three towns before he got to the waterside family cabin where the river narrowed and a tributary split off. Dominic enjoyed dropping into the towns. The ever-changing population and different characteristics of each one made for an interesting trip. He liked the coffee shops and fishing village feel of the largest, and the art-community feel of the others. They were all touristy towns, with pastel painted houses, bright marina cafés, and bars along the quays or high streets.

This summer, Dominic had considered taking a package holiday on a tropical beach somewhere, thinking maybe he’d encounter enough bikini-clad single girls to find one to love and have that love returned. He pushed the idea away—vacations only yielded flings, and he wanted more. Dominic enjoyed the journey up river, the sound of the water, the breeze on his skin, and the stars at night through the skylight in his sleeping compartment.

He drank the last of his bourbon and stood to clear up, and then pack a few clothes. He unloaded the dishwasher and then reloaded it with the dirty dishes. His cell phone rang as he ran up the stairs to his bedroom and he dragged it from his pants pocket to answer. The screen displayed his father’s picture. “Dad, what’s up, it’s one a.m.?”

Jack Carr’s voice held amusement as he spoke to his youngest son.

“I’m just checking in before you take off on vacation. I’ll be in court tomorrow so I’m calling now. Everything’s ready for you on River Sprite. Tom’s checked everything out and he’ll be at the marina about eleven to give you the keys. Have a good break.”
Dominic slowed his pace on the stairs. “Did you stay up especially to call me?” He frowned thinking about this.

“No, son, I’m working. This case gets more complex by the minute.”

Dominic rounded the top of the stairs and walked down the landing to his bedroom.

“Thank you for calling. I’ll keep in touch and, Dad, please take care not to overdo it. Can’t Jase help out?” He ran his free hand through his hair and leaned for a moment on the doorframe, wondering why his brother let his Dad work so hard at the firm. A year ago, his dad had suffered a heart attack. It was allegedly minor, but even so, Dominic worried about him.

“He’s got another job to do. I’m fine, really. I love my work. Good night, Dominic.”

“Goodnight, Dad.” He slipped his cell back into his pocket.

His duffle bag was at the back of the walk-in closet and Dominic levered off his boots before he padded in there. He stripped off his shirt and tossed it into the laundry hamper just inside the closet. A twinge of guilt forced furrows to his forehead. Maybe he should have gone into law the way his father and older brother expected, but it wasn’t in his heart and Dominic knew it had to be. How could you do your best for a client if you were a half-hearted lawyer?

No, Dominic went into stocks and shares. The company he worked for was a high-flying brokerage with some of the richest clients in the country. Dominic’s family wealth gave him a privileged upbringing, but he’d added to that by working hard since leaving college. Ten years had passed, the first five grueling, but now he breezed through it, and earned an enormous, bonus enhanced salary each year.

He picked up a few T-shirts and two pairs of jeans. They fit easily in the bottom of his grip bag. He added a sweater, and some underwear. Dominic hated packing. He never took much with him, and now he left the bag on the floor of the closet and went to take a shower. He’d need to drive out of the city early the next morning to the marina. It was barely a couple of hours’ journey, but that would extend considerably if he hit the main rush hour on the bridge.

Michelle Vega wound her long hair up into a topknot. Assigned below to the cabin for hours, she needed some fresh air. Jackson was at the helm when she stepped up onto the deck. She stood beside him, hanging onto the rail as the powerboat jumped in the water. They’d dropped Brad and Connor at the first riverside town to meet with their client, and now hurtled up river to the log cabin, where they were to lie low until contacted. The beams from the huge spotlights on the powerboat lit the way. The wooded riverbanks loomed in the darkness, briefly lit, and then receding in strange shapes as their boat flew by.

“What’s the hurry now, Jackson?” Michelle called as the wind whipped some of her hair from the topknot and slapped it against her lips.

Her brother glanced hurriedly at her. “Once I’ve dropped you, I have to clean and dump the boat a few miles upstream, and hike back to the cabin. I just want rid of it.”

A moment later, the spotlights picked out the private mooring of the log cabin hideout and Jackson brought the motorboat alongside the wooden, planked walkway.

“Michelle, take the gym bag from below with you. Be careful with it. I’ll be back in about an hour.”

She nodded at her brother, nervous about arriving at the cabin alone in the pitch-black night. She stepped down into the small covered area. The bag was bulky and misshapen. Michelle grabbed a flashlight from where two lay on the bench seat, next to the bag.

Jackson gave her the slightest goodbye, then reversed the boat, and took off up river again.

Michelle stared after him for a moment before aiming the beam of her flashlight along the walkway to find the path through the small trees and shrubs to the cabin. A bird flew up with a squawk, and still other birds fidgeted in the taller shrubs as she passed. The soft gurgle of the river, and the scrunch of twigs and gravel under her feet, emphasized how alone she was in a place she’d never been before … and at night, no less. Hell, I hope this place is safe. I hope Jackson gets here soon. I hope Brad and Connor are okay and on their way here. I wish we’d never taken this job. The bag bumped against her leg when she found a shallow pothole with her boot and stumbled a little. What’s in this bag, anyway?

The log cabin looked bigger than she’d imagined as she approached. A small Jeep stood to one side of it. The moon didn’t provide much light and the place seemed to crouch like a predator surrounded by the trees. Connor had said the cabin wouldn’t be locked. Michelle tried the door and when it opened, she aimed her flashlight around inside before walking in. To her surprise, there were modern lights, and she flipped them on as she explored each room. Michelle grinned to herself. She’d expected some kind of primitive shed, but the place was more like someone’s home. If the cabin belonged to her, she wouldn’t leave it unlocked, ever. She clicked down the catch on the Yale lock of the front door and heaved a sigh of relief.

The cabin was comfortable with supplies laid in by Connor. It was where Connor took his fishing breaks and had been his dad’s place until he passed a few years ago. A change of clothes for each of them had been left there, too, and Michelle had given Connor a backpack with some underwear and toiletries to leave for her as well as the clothes.

She dumped the gym bag and flashlight on top of a large desk in one corner of the room and went off to make coffee. She checked inside the fridge for something quick to eat, and found sliced cold chicken in a deli pack. She turned on the TV affixed to the wall and flipped through the channels for news, before making a sandwich as the coffee percolated. Then there it was—Alexander Probert, the billionaire entrepreneur, was to fly home from his vacation in the Bahamas as his staff reported a theft from his city home, and police were investigating the audacious robbery. The broadcaster flashed up photographs of the city home, presumably the staff member who’d reported the theft, and, inexplicably Probert’s country mansion, and then the billionaire, but when questioned at the news conference, the police admitted there were no leads as yet and their investigation would continue.

People had filled the outdoor tables, and by the time Michelle shared a dark chocolate ice-cream dessert with Dominic, the interior of the restaurant hummed with chatter, audible through the open windows. A queue of people waited by the front door in an orderly line roped off with a sky-blue cord looped over low standalone posts.

Michelle put down her spoon and sighed. “The food was yummy. Thank you for bringing me here. Maybe we should give up our table and have coffee at the boat.”

He glanced at the queue of diners waiting for a table. “I’ll get the bill.”

A server was passing a moment later and Dominic called her over.

With the bill paid, they left the restaurant and wandered hand in hand, quietly back to the River Sprite.

Dominic helped Michelle onto the boat, one hand around hers and the other in the small of her back. “You know the last time we said we’d have coffee here, we never drank it, and we only took one swallow of cognac. I had to throw the lot away when I made breakfast the next morning.”

Michelle laughed. “I know. Are you complaining?”

Dominic shook his head. “Nuh-uh,” he murmured.
He pulled her close and nuzzled her neck. His lips traveled in gentle kisses all the way to her mouth where he paused so close his breath feathered over her face. His voice low, he whispered, “I can’t begin to tell you how I feel when we’re together like this. It makes me soft inside thinking about all the ways I’m going to make love to you. My stomach goes gooey and I get this overwhelming need to kiss you, hold you close. Strip you naked and lick your …”

She molded to his muscled body, her arms thrown around his neck, to keep his head close for her kiss. She left her lips close to his, unable to break away. Her breath left her in little whooshes as her stomach dipped and cream drenched her pussy. She pushed against him. The hard column of his erection delicious on her stomach, she rocked her hips to push against him, and heard him gasp.

“That felt so good.” He drifted his hands up and down her back in a slow tease. “Shall we skip coffee?”

“Yes.” She ached to feel his hard cock thrusting into her. Her thighs clenched and cream slipped into her panties.

He grabbed her ass and lifted her.

Michelle wrapped her legs around his waist as he turned to carry her into the cabin.

Dominic spun around to sit on the closest bench seat. He pulled her against him.

Her pussy pressed on the bulge in his jeans. She used her knees on the cushioned bench to lever against the shape of his hard cock. “Mmm, you want me.”

He smiled and grabbed her jaw with one hand, kissing her hard before he answered, “You think.” He grasped her waist and lifted her onto her feet. “Don’t move.” He opened the fastening of her jeans and pulled them down to her knees. Looking up at her, he kissed along her thighs.

The touch of his lips on her skin and the trail of his fingers up the back of her thighs gave her the most decadent feeling. She throbbed with the need to feel his fingers inside her, his mouth on her, and a groan escaped her. “Dominic.”

He hooked his thumbs in her panties and dragged them down to her knees. “Let’s get these off you, shall we?” He brought her across his knee in one deft move and pushed her to lie down.

Michelle kicked her shoes off as he leaned over her and dotted kisses over her stomach.

Dominic sat up and pulled off her jeans and panties, dropping them to the cabin floor.

Michelle’s pussy clenched. Her nipples peaked and chafed on the lace of her bra. She tried to sit up to kiss him, but he used one hand to pin her down, the other he eased between her thighs.

Michelle turned in the shelter of Dominic’s outstretched arm, and slipped her arm around him.
He smiled with pleasure and held her around the shoulders as he led her across the parking lot and along the walkways to where the River Sprite was moored.

The soft slap of the river water, warm gentle breeze, and yellow lanterns lighting the boardwalk provided a special atmosphere. Dominic helped Michelle aboard and after unlocking the cabin, showed her in with a grin. “Welcome to the River Sprite. I’ll make coffee. You can look around if you’d like to.” He turned into the galley to start making coffee.

“It’s much bigger than I expected. I’ve only been on smaller motorboats.” She gave herself a quick tour.

Dominic heard her opening doors and making sounds of delight. He’d poured boiling water on the coffee granules when she appeared by his side. He turned to her. “I made instant. It’s quicker. White, black, sugar?”

Michelle smiled as she answered. “Black, no sugar, thank you.”

“Would you like cognac? I have some French stuff I bought yesterday.” He handed her a cup of coffee.

Michelle took the cup. “That sounds good. Just a little, please.”

He found glasses and brought the cognac from out of the supply cupboard. As he splashed the dark amber liquid into each glass, Michelle closed the gap between them. Dominic placed the bottle of cognac carefully onto the worktop. Michelle’s proximity sent little shocks of desire through him. Acutely aware of the way her hair fell gently over the satin skin of her shoulders, Dominic’s gaze traced a path along where he wished his lips might follow with kisses.

She put her coffee cup down next to his, and in one move slid her hands up his chest and leaned against his body.

Dominic instinctively put his arms around her. He kissed the top of her head as she nestled her face against his chest. His eyes closed as a wave of tenderness flowed over him. A faint scent of roses filled his head.

Michelle looked up into his eyes. “You feel good. Do you work out?” She ran her hands around on the muscles of his chest.

Even through the black T-shirt he’d worn with his suit, her touch ignited desire and his cock stirred. His heart did a weird flip and his stomach tightened. He nodded, unable to trust his voice not to betray the urgent need to fuck, which gripped him as she ran her hands around his hips and actually grabbed his ass.

She ran her tongue over her top lip as she stared up into Dominic’s eyes and that was it.
Dominic bent his head to hers and captured her mouth in a kiss that weakened his thighs.

He slipped his hands around her face to hold her until he’d kissed her breathless. Hot streaks of desire burned over his stomach and his cock jerked into an erection. Her tongue against his sent shivers down his back to pool under his balls. Soft tendrils of her hair caught under his palms as he held her face and bit at her bottom lip when he broke the kiss to let her breathe.

I originally expected this story to be a short, but as the plot developed and the characters took over, the story grew and grew, and still there’s more to tell, because one of the supporting characters, Connor, is going to have his own story.
Dominic Carr, my hero and Michelle Vega, my heroine, couldn’t be more different, but they are instantly drawn to each other and the resulting passion between them is intense. Dominic’s hopes are high, making him vulnerable. Michelle is involved in a dangerous lifestyle far removed from Dominic’s, but she’s lonely. This opens her up to taking chances when she meets Dominic.
I love water, rivers, and the ocean. They have their own very special atmosphere, and I wanted to flavor the story setting with the sounds, and smells of sun drenched harbor towns, wide rivers and boats, to provide contrast with the suspense element of the story.
When you read the story and Dominic sails away on vacation. Think Monterey or the marinas in the Caribbean or the Florida keys. The sky is Grecian blue, the air and water sparkles. There’s the smell of salt and sea, and wheel of seagulls as the couple walk on the quay together.

Breakfast in a sun-drenched marina anyone? #Teaser from #WIP #romanticsuspense

From An Unusual Vacation #WIP #romanticsuspense
The summer day dawned in a blaze of glorious sunshine. Dominic checked his packing and his email before he downed a glass of orange juice and took off on his vacation. He grinned as he drove over the bridge in minimal traffic and was on his way down the river road to the marina.

Dominic drove into the marina parking lot just before ten. He had an hour to kill before his dad’s caretaker showed up with the keys to the yacht. Dominic briefly thought of taking the short drive to the cottage where the caretaker lived in the grounds of his dad’s lodge, to pick up the key, but the delicious aroma of cooking bacon drifted to him on the breeze as the marina café doors were propped open by a server. Hungry now, Dominic walked over to one of the tables placed in the morning sun outside the café. He checked the little menu in its plastic stand, and a server arrived at his table. Dominic ordered bacon and fried tomato toasted sandwiches, and coffee.

The breeze had picked up a little since he’d arrived and the pennants strung from each lamppost along the quay flapped making a strange high-pitched hum. Dominic gazed around at the boats moored in the berths. The riot of color and white against the backdrop of bright blue sky and marine blue water brought a smile to his face. He relaxed into the canvas of the café chair and stretched his legs out under the table. This is a good start. I feel better already.

His order arrived and Dominic tucked into his food happily. The café interior filled up and two small groups of people took tables outside close to Dominic’s table. They nodded a greeting, a smile between strangers in the lovely morning. Dominic had paid his bill and was about to wander along to his dad’s yacht, when an SUV screeched into the parking lot kicking up the fine gravel into a cloud, and drawing everyone’s stare as the occupants piled out, and charged down one of the walkways to the boats moored there. Dominic watched as the three men and one young woman clutched at each other when one of them stumbled. There was just enough time for Dominic to register the slender figure, and long, light brown, hair of the young woman, before one of the men stepped behind her and the group disappeared. Must have got in a boat. Wonder what that’s about?
