Teaser Tuesday

Candy Hearts

Working in a surf coast hotel seems like the remedy for Tom’s unhappiness, as he nurses a broken heart, but as Valentine’s Day approaches, and the hotel plans festivities, Tom realizes he’s lonely. It seems he’s the only one without someone special in his life. Will the girl he’s been too engrossed in his work to pursue, respond if he asks her to the dance? Has she even noticed him as he visits the café where she works every week?

She certainly has noticed Tom. She sighs over him as she serves his coffee. When he finally approaches her, she has to decide if she can trust him with her secret as she falls head over heels in love.

A contemporary, erotic romance for people who love a happy ending.

Tom picked up his coffee cup and then replaced it in the saucer without drinking. He messed around with the handle and turned the cup on its saucer a couple of times. He ran his hand through his hair.

“I like her a lot, more than a lot. I wish she’d told me. I can only guess at her reasons. I’m sorry I really should get back to work.” He stood and left the table.

John stared after him. Shit, that didn’t go too well. I should have said more. He’s thinking about that Amber chick’s behavior now, I bet. He stood too and took the coffee cups to the dishwasher situated under the counter at the end of the bar.

Pete wandered over to Tom after he’d served a couple of Appletinis to customers.

“What was all that about. You’re not being let go are you?”

Tom rallied. “No, just checking my shifts.”

Pete raised his eyebrows. “Looked more serious than that, bro. Don’t take this the wrong way. Was he warning you off his sister? We’ve seen you together. A few of us have. Not our business of course, but just so you know, we all hope it works out for you.”

Astounded Tom rounded on his colleague. “None of you guys thought to tell me who she is?” He saw Pete’s crestfallen expression. “Sorry, it’s okay, Pete. He wasn’t warning me off, but I guess I should prepare myself for the inevitable.”

Pete shook his head. “And what’s that?”

Alice’s assistant gave a low whistle as Oliver left the shop. She went to stand next to Alice and they both watched Oliver as he passed the big windowpane. It wasn’t easy because of the light inside and almost dusk out, but they both stared.

“Wow, where did he come from? I’ve not seen a guy as gorgeous as him in a long time.” Her assistant made a face at Alice, which she interpreted as conveying huge appreciation of the man who’d just bought flowers.

Alice took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh. “He’ll be married. Probably have three kids. The flowers are for his wife, for sure. No one like him will be single. You’re right, Joyce, he’s gorgeous. Made me tremble, looking at me with those lovely blue eyes. I could barely tie the flower bunch for staring at his mouth. I hope he didn’t notice. He took off quickly, probably thought I was about to fall at his feet. Look he left his change.” She opened her hand to show Joyce the coins.

Joyce pursed her lips. “Maybe he was just in a hurry. Give it to me I’ll put it in the charity collection.” She held her hand out and Alice put the money into her palm.

She watched as Joyce fed the coins into the animal shelter’s collection box.

“It would be so nice to have someone like him to go home to.” Her voice was wistful as she walked past Joyce and started tidying the counter. They would be open for a couple more hours, and she liked to keep the place looking good.

Joyce grinned. “He might be gorgeous, but he could be horrible, grumpy, snore, or something. Maybe he’s bought the flowers to say sorry for something he did such as...” She stopped talking as two customers came through the door.

Alice greeted them.

First Chapter Friday

Chapter One

As usual, the shop started to get busier on Thursday lunchtime. Alice finished hand tying a bunch of Ranunculus. The flower heads varied in size and tone of pink, but all were sumptuous. She’d mixed in an occasional, looped, bright green broad leaf, and tied the distinctive, bleached hessian string the shop used on all its hand tied bouquets. She sighed. It was less than two weeks to Valentine’s Day. All the shops displayed advertisements for perfume, candy and other gifts for a sweetheart.

Alice didn’t have one. Her sweetheart had left her three years ago and since then she’d remained alarmingly single. That morning she’d received her own posters to advertise flowers and gifts. She intended to put them up and change the display in the windows when the shop closed.

Alice took payment for the flowers and watched as the man left with them. She wondered who they might be for—girlfriend, wife, lover? Although she sold flowers and candies, she never received them. Her small circle of friends gave her odd little presents for Christmas and her birthday—a strange gorilla key chain, a mug labeled ‘Do not disturb’. It was as if they didn’t know her at all, and maybe they didn’t. They didn’t know she perused the dating sites online. They didn’t know she’d recently bought a vibrator. She had it delivered from the store advertised as the best sex-toy shop for women on the web. The package was anonymously brown on the outside, but the next layer of wrapping delighted in a shocking pink.

The shop emptied for a few moments. Alice walked to the window and switched on the extra fairy lights. This year winter brought darkness much earlier in the day. There seemed to be less daylight than other years. Maybe it was the rain, but it was time the weather cheered up a little in Alice’s opinion.

The fairy lights Alice added each October, and then left there until March joined the window display, habitually lit with a string of white rose-shaped lights. The standard trees on either side of the door outside were decorated with silver-white fairy lights too, and customers often commented on how inviting the shop looked. Alice served another two people before her assistant came back from lunch, and then as one o’clock hit, the shop became busy.

One side of the shop sold boxed and bars of candy. Alice sourced it from all over the world. She spent more on airfreight sometimes than she might recoup from the sale of the candy, but she liked to have this array. Customers would come in especially from all over the city for their favorite treat. On holidays like Christmas, Easter, and Valentine’s Day, they would buy both flowers and candy. Alice loved her shop and her work. The hours were long, but worth it. She travelled to the flower markets before dawn once a week and had some flowers delivered by local growers.

When there was a short lull in business at two-thirty, before the afternoon became busy again, Alice took her own lunch break. She always did the same thing. She’d walk to the park at the end of the street and eat some of her sandwich, but feed lots of the sliced bread or roll to the ducks on the pond there. All year round, in any weather, Alice did it. Then she walked around the park to travel to her shop via the back street. There, at the rear of the park, was another pond. At this far end of the park, there were statues. They lined the last part of the path around the pond in a mock Italian garden style.

Since Christmas, Alice stopped and fed a swan there. It never ventured from the thick reedy pond to the well-populated duck pond, and Alice thought it could be lonely. She’d read that swans mated for life. This swan was solitary and had an air of sadness as it glided to Alice for her offering of bread. Alice brought an extra piece of bread especially for this swan.

As she fed it, she talked to it, about their shared solitary status, their lack of a partner in life to love, and who loved them. The swan got up onto the path that day as Alice talked to it and fed it the slice of super-seeded bread. Alice told it about Valentine’s Day approaching, and how as usual she’d sell flowers for other girls, knowing she’d not be receiving any. I wonder why you’re alone, Swan? She left the swan eating the last piece of the bread and went back to work.

Talking to the bird helped her deal with the loneliness that was becoming acute. She looked back at the swan as she exited the huge wrought-iron park gates. It was hopping into the pond. Alice hurried back to the shop feeling refreshed.

Teaser from The Flower Box

Oliver went back to his wheelbarrow behind the hedge and took a broom from it. He swept the crumbs from the bread Alice fed the swan into the pond. It wasn’t good to get the bird out of the water too much. That’s why it was alone now. Its mate had been killed. Oliver shook his head. Human beings could be incredibly cruel. He didn’t understand it.

He’d finished work down that end of the park and walked back to the gardeners’ sheds past the café. It would soon be dusk. The days were still short that time of year and Oliver packed up his tools. He shouted a goodnight to a colleague as he left the sheds and strode off to the exit. That day wasn’t the happiest for Oliver. He just had enough time to buy flowers and put them on his mom’s grave in the almost adjacent cemetery.

Ten years had passed. He put flowers on her grave only every month now on the fifth. He hardly ever saw his dad since he got remarried and moved. That was okay. Oliver and his dad didn’t see eye to eye on most things. His dad told him he was wasting a good brain and should get back to college to finish his degrees. Oliver liked what he did. He was past wanting to be a dentist. As he reached the corner of the street, Oliver stopped walking abruptly in surprise. An empty space greeted him where the flower stand usually was that sold flowers to people going into the cemetery. Two people behind him on the sidewalk had to stop too and he apologized.

“Sorry, sorry I was just surprised to see the flower stand gone.”

The couple smiled and walked on. Oliver put his hands in his jacket pockets and turned back to walk to the end of the block where he thought he might have seen a flower shop as he drove down that street. If he hurried, he might still catch the last of the daylight. He considered dashing back to his car in the employees’ parking lot and driving there, but hurried on knowing he might not get a parking spot on the busy street where he only vaguely remembered a flower shop.

It started to rain heavily just as he arrived at the shop and rushed in through the doors. He looked around. This place was different from the flower stand. The flowers were in huge colored plastic containers and not already arranged in gaudy cellophane packs. He tried picking up a bunch of bright yellow and orange flowers. Oliver knew they would be expensive. He couldn’t get hold of a bunch and realized the flowers were single stems. He joined the short line-up, knowing he’d have to be served.

He ran his hand through his dark hair to take the wet bits from his forehead. The people in front moved aside and Oliver was face to face with the young woman he’d watched talk to the swan.

She smiled at him.
“Hi, how can I help you?”

Oliver didn’t speak for a few seconds, as he registered that with no trouble at all he’d found where the girl worked. He smiled then.
“I need a bunch of flowers. The orange and yellow ones are good.” He gestured at them.

Alice went around the end of the counter to the container.
“How many blooms, Sir?” She deftly took four out and held them for him to see. “Hand tied?”

Oliver watched her. She’s pretty, much prettier close up than I’d realized. Why is she single?
“Six, seven…sure, hand tied,” he answered her question, as he took his wallet from his back pocket.

Alice carried the flowers back to the counter, tied the bunch, and told him the price.

Oliver took the flowers and handed her money with the other hand. He glanced back at the daylight through the glass front door. He needed to hurry. He didn’t wait for the few cents change. He left the shop. He walked at a rapid pace on his long legs. People walking in the opposite direction moved aside as they saw him coming. The rain was steady and dripped down the collar of his jacket. Oliver sheltered the bunch of flowers a little with his body.

At the cemetery, the path lights were on. Daylight was about gone. Oliver sprinted over the manicured lawn to the last row of graves. He put the flowers in the marble vase attached to the headstone. It had collected rainwater.

“Hi Mom, nearly didn’t get here before dark.” He stood for a few seconds looking at the flowers and then left. He walked more slowly to the park workers’ car lot. The entrance there was never closed. A chain that could reach from one post to another on either side of the entrance lay coiled by one of them. No one cared to, or had the task to pull it across, and block the entrance off after dark. As he reached his car he had a plan to give the pretty girl in the flower shop Valentine gifts.
