Excerpt

You stole my cinnamon roll.”

Ahh her voice. Adam’s entire body ignited with it. His heart perked up, started its gallop, and his blood thrummed with awareness. All his senses beat her name. Cassandra. She was so dang pretty, pretending to pout, but fierce and powerful all the same, and all untangled this afternoon. Her hair was loose, long wavy locks flying in the breeze. Vibrant eyes, happy eyes. He climbed down from the fence, tossed his gloves to the side and wasted no time at all in stalking her and wrapping his arms around her. He didn’t kiss her even though it was all that dragged his mind these days, especially with their bodies pressed together. A little flirting was his intention. If it happened to lead to kissing, he’d know he was doing it right.

All bets are off when it comes to those cinnamon rolls.” He leaned in and dragged his lips, his nose up her neck. “Decadent, with all that sugary caramelized goodness, unique places with hints of spices I can’t name.” He did kiss her then, behind the ear, lingering as the heat built around them.

Cardamom,” she breathed. “And orange.”

Never would have guessed. I need you to lead me.” Adam brushed his finger over her full mouth. “All these hidden secrets I’m in search of.”

I don’t know if you want all my secrets.”

She wasn’t pushing him away or pulling back. Progress. “I’m pretty sure I do. Like this one here. Let me guess.” He gently kissed the corner of her mouth then narrowed his eyes at her. “Didn’t know powdered sugar was on those glorious rolls.”

She laughed as if she’d succeeded in tricking him. And he frowned when she wiped her mouth. “Didn’t know I got sugar on me.”

On you? You’re all the sugar and spices wrapped up in the perfect package for me.

It’s from the donuts that came later.”

He squeezed her to him and moaned. “I missed donuts?”

Brought you some.” She handed him a small brown paper bag and when he opened it, he nearly fainted in pleasure.

I bow to those women,” Adam said after inhaling one of the donut holes, still warm, with sugary goodness melting on the outside.

You bow, huh? Guess who made them?” She pointed to herself and his smile stretched across his face. “I had a chance to take a class years ago when I was in Portugal. Sonhos, they’re called. Dreams.”

He gave her a loud, smacking, powdered-sugar-covered kiss and twirled her around, which made her laugh again. Every time she let loose with that beautiful sound, he noticed nuances of it. A spring tree in bloom letting all her bright foliage show, from light green to grassy, growing into a darker hue with certainty. He was going to spend a lifetime making her laugh. “I’ll promise you anything if you make those for me again.”

Maybe you don’t have to beg. Maybe I’d like cooking for you.” Cassandra untangled herself as she said it. Christ, the woman could tease. Telling him she wanted to cook for him while separating them. And this time it was her turn to leave him standing behind.

I need to do some work.” Her smile was all happiness and light.

Now?” He glanced from the food of his dreams to the woman of his dreams.

A little bit.” Was she taking pity on him?

Are we walking again tonight, Cassandra?”

I’d like that.”

Rarely do we get to pick our battles… Often, they choose us. Fab new release #PNR from @AuthorHKCarlton

Writing Paranormal Romance - Keepin' It Real

Thank you so much for having me today. I’m excited to share a little bit about my new release, Autumn’s Healing, a paranormal, erotic, romance published by Totally Bound.

It’s kind of a departure for me, dipping my toe into the paranormal romance pool. I’ve waded into the shallow end before in the form of time-travel, but I’m always afraid of taking things too far. (Like I just did with that opening.) LOL! But seriously, I don’t want readers to put the story down and think, ‘oh come on, H K, that would never happen!’ I know in the paranormal genre there is a little more latitude granted, but it’s still not a free-for-all of anything goes. There are rules, the most confusing of which is: 'Don't be afraid to break the rules'.

Though this story isn't about vampires or shifters or even time-travel. Nor did I have to do any world-building. Instead, it's more about things that go bump in the night and two people who've had more than their share of difficulties. It's about healing and rebuilding. But to rebuild, you have to tear things down, right back to the bare framework and begin again. Perhaps forever altered but hopefully stronger and sturdier than before. They are survivors. This is Mikaylah and Jerusalem’s story.

I hope you enjoy it.

Blessings,
H K

Blurb:

Rarely do we get to pick our battles… Often, they choose us.

Single mom Mikaylah MacDonough and her only daughter Autumn have been on their own a long time. So, when Autumn goes off to school, it seems only natural for Kaylah to pull up stakes and follow, though with some clear-cut boundaries, of course. She’s determined to give Autumn space to enjoy the whole college experience but remain close enough for emergencies, meals and laundry. But when the closing date of the current house overlaps with taking possession of the ‘new’ house, along with orientation week, Autumn has to go it alone. From that moment on, Kaylah’s dreams of a new beginning turn into a complete and total nightmare.

When former serviceman Jerusalem Aames drives up to the century-old Cleary house, he sees dollar signs for himself and his all-veteran crew. The rundown, old place would finally put his fledgling construction-renovation firm in the black. But the moment he meets the gorgeous homeowner who had been duped into buying the money-pit, his attraction is swift and instantaneous.

However, there’s something very strange going on in the dilapidated house that has nothing to do with rotting timbers or shoddy wiring. Whatever it is, it’s affecting Kaylah’s state of mind, and Salem finds himself in a battle he’s not sure he can win.

What Reviewers are saying:

From the start, I was intrigued with Kaylah and her old house. The idea of the paranormal good or bad makes the story thrilling. Salem and Kaylah are both survivors and I appreciate how well they are suited for one another. Then comes the shocking truth that Salem uncovers and I was flabbergasted, did not expect the turn in this story. I love it! Autumn's Healing is a highly recommended read!

They ended up in each other’s arms. Salem’s pulse was already racing from the strange events, but his interest in Kaylah was undeniable. He seized the moment and captured her lips.

At first, she froze, and he thought she might push him away.

A small sound erupted from the back of her throat and she pressed her mouth firmly to his. She fisted her hands into his shirt and pulled herself up against him. She’d be fully aware of his arousal, but that knowledge only seemed to excite her. She hauled him even closer, gripping his shirt so tightly her fingers bit into his abdomen. To his shock, she snaked her other hand downward, palming his hard-on. Unprepared, he choked at the unexpected but welcome grope.

The pressure felt good. He pushed his length into her. She rubbed with the heel of her hand. It had been a long time since he’d been with a woman. He was afraid if he allowed her to continue, he might embarrass himself over a couple of open-mouthed kisses and a few strokes of his over-eager cock.

To take the heat off him, he skimmed his fingers up under her shirt. She stiffened and gripped his wrist. Then swiftly, she pulled away.

“I’m sorry, Kay, I wasn’t thinking, I didn’t mean to make you uncomf— Ahh, fuck!” He raked his hand through his hair.

“Neither one of us was thinking,” she murmured as she took a step away.

In a nervous gesture, Salem swiped a hand over the back of his neck. He figured he’d kick himself out before she had the chance. “I’m gonna go,” he said, heading for the door. “But I’ll be back in the morning, and we’ll do a thorough walk-through. I’ll definitely take a better look at the wiring issue.”

“Thank you.” Her voice sounded raspy and sexy as all fuck.

He let himself out. The screen door squeaked as it closed behind him. Hazarding a quick look over his shoulder, he could barely make out Kaylah’s silhouette in the entryway.

He’d taken one step off the porch before he heard her soft voice.

“Salem… don’t go.”

Salem’s entire body tensed, his cock surged. Swiftly, he did an about-face and, as best he could, he hopped back up the stairs, careful to avoid the broken one. Kaylah pushed open the screen door and welcomed him back inside.

Amanda Bretz visits the blog today and tells us about her vision of the celebrity world as Totally Bound releases , 'Life of Privilege'

Another Side to Celebrity in Life of Privilege

Hi Elodie, thanks for once again hosting me on your wonderful blog. I’m very pleased to be here today discussing my new release Life of Privilege, released by Totally Bound Publishing. The novel is the newest in their best-selling What’s Her Secret? imprint, which are books that focus on a woman with a secret.

The tagline for this novel is Living the life of a celebrity isn’t always as perfect as it seems. As that short sentence alludes to, this is a story that shows there’s another side to being a celebrity beyond what the public sees. I know nothing about being a celebrity. I’m happy just being regular ol’ me, but when I set out to create this story, I did what writers do best: I used my imagination.

I envision celebrity worlds being not as glittering and glamorous as they’re often made out to be in media. When celebrities and reality TV stars end up in the news because of ill-behavior or some sort of scandal, I often wonder if there’s not a deeper reason for their actions beyond what the media reports. That mode of thought was the real jumping off point for me in creating this story and the book opens with a rather scandalous situation: a woman leaving a man at the altar.

Of course, since my heroine is a celebrity, it’s not as easy as just slipping out the back door of the church and going on her merry little way. The wedding takes place at one of the most prominent cathedrals in New York City and it’s being televised. The paparazzi is camped out in front of the church and in order for her to escape the situation, Katherine has to go through what I very well believe hell may look like. The path from the cathedral doors to the limo waiting to take her away is lined with members of the media, armed with huge cameras and tons of spectators.

I’ve brought along an excerpt from the beginning of the book and I hope your readers enjoy the opening of my novel.

Blurb:
Living the life of a celebrity isn’t always as perfect as it seems.
Katherine Dawson was born into a life of privilege as the heiress to an apparel dynasty. Between judging a reality TV competition for budding fashion designers and having been the face of her family’s clothing line for most of her life, she’s one of the biggest celebrities in her field.
When she becomes engaged to up-and-coming television producer Nathan Taylor, she appears to have it all. To any outsider, she has a picture-perfect life, so when Katherine leaves her groom-to-be at the altar and disappears, the tabloids are full of speculation over her sudden departure.
Fleeing New York to hide out in Seattle, she quickly finds that living the life of an heiress in hiding isn’t as easy as she thought, especially after she meets a magnetic writer named Royce Reynolds. In her new life on the West Coast, she struggles to keep her anonymity, and experiences a relationship with a man who wants her for the person she is, not the celebrity she used to be.

Excerpt:

“Daddy?”
Katherine Dawson’s voice echoed off the stone walls of St. Patrick’s cathedral. As one of New York City’s oldest churches, the structure had enough prestige and beauty to hold Sunday service, memorials, and it provided the perfect setting for storybook weddings.
When her father didn’t answer right away, Katherine gathered the heavy material of her wedding gown in her hand and walked the few steps to reach her dad. She looked down at the enormous bouquet of flowers in her hand and almost lost her nerve. Yet the longer she stared at the arrangement of white roses, calla lilies and orchids, the more it reinforced her gut reaction to this day. Like the stunning flowers arranged so perfectly in the bundle, she was also trussed up and made to look pristine. She too was arranged at her peak, the moment in her life when she was likely most attractive. She knew if she went through with this decision that just like the flowers, soon she would wither and lose her beautiful essence. Through the heavy wooden doors, she heard the faint strains coming from the fifteen-piece orchestra. They were preparing to play the wedding march. It was now or never. If she had any chance at escaping the glamorous affair, it was in this moment.
“Daddy.” She stood in front of her father and knew she must look as panicked and frightened as a wounded animal. “I have to get out of here. I can’t go through with this.”
Tears welled in her eyes, but she blinked fast to push them away. Once the waterworks started, she didn’t know when they might stop. She dropped her hold on the dress and reached for her father’s hand.
“I’m leaving. If you want to stay and deal with mother’s temper tantrums when she finds out I left Nathan at the altar, so be it. Daddy, I just can’t do this. Well, won’t you say something?”
Her father cleared his throat and it was then she noticed the tears that had formed in his eyes. She hated that she’d let him down, but she couldn’t go through life with such a momentous lie hanging over her head. She stood on tiptoe, wrapping her arms around him for a quick hug. “I’m sorry I’ve hurt you. I don’t want to be a disappointment to you, but I have to stay true to myself. You won’t see me for a while. I’m going away, but I don’t know where yet. I’ve got to go find out who I really am without all the pressures of being Katherine Dawson hanging over my head.”
“Kitty Kat,” he whispered, using her childhood nickname, “I could never be disappointed in you. I’m crying because you’ve made me happy. Go find yourself. Follow your dreams. That’s what I’ve always wanted for you. I love you.”
“Daddy, I love you, too.”
She turned her head toward the heavy wooden doors again. The wedding march was playing. She had to go now. Preparing for the sprint she knew she’d have to do to make it to the limousine that waited outside, she kicked off her silver-sequined Louboutin heels. Dropping her bouquet on the ground and gathering her skirt in her hands, she hurried out of the front door and down the church steps.
In her haste to escape the wedding, she’d forgotten about the crowd of reporters and spectators gathered along the sidewalk and in the street. At least fifty black cameras took aim at her and several eager members of the paparazzi stood right in her path, their camera flashes going off. She refused to look into their lenses, even as they called out to her by name. Her gaze was locked in on the back door of the limousine. Once she got there, she’d be home free.
“Katherine! Katherine! Why are you running?”
“Have cold feet, Katherine?”
“Where’s the groom?”
Ignoring the inane questions from the media, she opened the door to the back seat of the car. Franklin, her family’s driver, jumped from the front seat, prepared to help her into the vehicle. Katherine met his gaze and she shook her head. He took her unspoken command and hopped back behind the wheel. She could handle the paparazzi. After all, she’d been dodging the vultures since she’d been a teen. Pulling the door closed behind her provided a moment of peace. However, her relief was cut short as half of the camera-wielding men formed a semi-circle around the limousine while the rest scattered to nearby cabs. The car had to move before they got trapped—or worse—were followed by the bloodthirsty press.
“Where to?”
